Lactobacilli MRS Agar
Lactobacilli MRS Agar, also referred to as Lactobacillus MRS Agar or LMRS Agar, is an agar medium used for the selective isolation and enumeration of Lactobacilli from various sources which include feces and dairy. Proteose Peptone, Beef Extract, and Yeast Extract provide nitrogenous sources, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Dextrose is the main fermentable carbohydrate. Sodium Acetate and Ammonium Citrate serve as both selective agents and energy sources. Potassium Phosphate acts as pH buffer, while Magnesium and Manganese Sulfates provide cations essential for bacterial metabolism. Tween 80 is a surfactant to facilitate nutrient uptake by the Lactobacilli. Agar is the gelifying agent. There is a choice of 3 sizes - 500g, 2kg, and 10kg.
PREPARATION: Mix 70 grams of the medium in one liter of purified water until evenly dispersed. Heat with repeated stirring until boiling to dissolve completely. Distribute and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes.
